Alright Citadelians, we usually find ourselves crammed into some gross, beer-soaked basement, but this time, the heavy metal gods (or maybe just some very confused paleontologists) decided to bless us with something genuinely bizarre. Picture a violently hot day in Zurich, and your silver-moustached hero is sweating out half his body weight just walking to the Natural History Museum of the University of Zurich (it was on top of a small hill), with a korean BBQ sandwich in hand, sauce dripping on his loose-fitting Kampfar shirt. All to arrive and see a dino-themed death metal quintet who go by… Vorax.
Yeah, you read that right. A museum. I’m not sure how Vorax managed that but kudos to them. Sometimes you just gotta ask! Like when we did photos for Mayhem with an iPhone 14.
It’s Dino-might!
Vorax totally leaned into the sheer glory of the setting. Stationed right in front of actual fossil exhibits, these Swiss lads took the stage draped in Jurassic Park t-shirts and armed with their own custom Vorax Pilsner at the merch stand. It was delicious, highly drinkable, and absolutely essential for surviving the muggy indoor heat. As if that wasn't absurd enough, the prehistoric beast at the enterance was wearing a custom Vorax bib. If you aren't completely sold on that visual alone, I don't know what to tell you. NOW THERE WERE RULES. This is a museum after all, so no moshing!
They ripped straight into "T-Rex," which remains one of the most vicious (and catchy!) cuts in their arsenal. The bassist, Frugi, was going off like Necrobutcher from Mayhem, just pure, feral, unhinged energy. He rules and you can clearly see he’s a veteran of the scene, starting out with cult heroes Messiah waaaay back. Frontman Beni, also known for his work in Omophagia, pushed his vocal delivery beyond standard DM grunts. He delivered flesh-crawling, brutal screams that echoed through the halls like an apex predator marking its territory, and “The Great Dying”, was a big highlight. Amazing energy from him.
Vulcano Shocked
Vorax also decided this gig was the perfect time to baptize their new slab of Mesozoic metal, Volcano Shock. Did they give a profound, philosophical speech? Naaah they literally just poured their own Pilsner all over a physical copy of the record. They ran through a number of songs from their small catalog (Vulcano Shock is their only full length), and the guitar duo were sharper than raptor’s teeth. They locked down the rhythm with filthy, relentless riffs on tracks like "Devouring Raw Flesh”. The headbanging adults AND children (obviously, there’s dinosaurs involved) were all super into it. Finally, Flavio! He was the backbone of the entire operation, and delivered osteo-blast beats and relentless pounding that drove the momentum of the entire set.
To cap off the night of prehistoric chaos, they ended the set with a massive Bolt Thrower cover (you can definitely hear the influence which like the Swiss flag, is a big plus). It hit harder than the Chicxulub asteroid. Just a disgustingly heavy cover that crushed whatever was left of our eardrums. It was exactly what you want from an unique underground gig. Unpretentious, and fueled by good beer and better riffs. Check out their site and all the links here. TOTAL SUPPORT!
